The inaugural REWIRE Showcase Event took place at the Engine Shed in Bristol on Friday 6 December, with partners across academia, industry, and policy coming together to share their insights and shape the research and innovation direction for the Innovation and Knowledge Centre (IKC).

The event highlighted the importance of developing pioneering semiconductor technologies and devices to accelerate the UK’s Net Zero ambitions by delivering novel high voltage electronic wide and ultra-wide band gap semiconductor devices from academia into the power electronic technologies of tomorrow.

The showcase was attended by over 90 delegates from across the semiconductor sector to learn more about the vision and ambitions of REWIRE. The programme included presentations from:

  • Prof. Judith Squires, Deputy Vice Chancellor at the University of Bristol to highlight the value of REWIRE to the University and how the IKC fits into the University’s strategic priorities.
  • Dr. Emran Mian, Director General for Digital Technologies and Telecoms at the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology, discussing the strategic importance of semiconductors to the UK’s industrial strategy.
  • Our Director, Prof. Martin Kuball introducing why REWIRE is here and exploring thought-provoking “what if” scenarios that could be enabled by wide band gap semiconductors.
  • A fascinating keynote presentation from Prof. Victor Veliadis of Power America discussing the need to accelerate wide band gap chip and power electronics commercialisation.
  • Dr. Aileen O’Mahony from Oxford Instruments Plasma Technology and Dr. Emil Jonasson from the UK Atomic Energy Authority showcasing the innovative work they’re already doing with REWIRE and the incredible benefits of partnering with us.
  • Dr. Katie Hore, our Innovation Director, concluding the talks with a summary of REWIRE’s plans and a practical guide on how to partner with REWIRE, providing a clear pathway to collaboration and innovation.

A huge thank you to everyone who attended and contributed to making the event such a rewarding and memorable day. The REWIRE team looks forward to welcoming you to future events!
